9) Concluding a course - Phase 3 (my abstract from P&I)

NOTE: This applies to those taking a 3 or 6 week break and also for those finishing completely.

  • Upon stopping hCG, continue the Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) for 3 days.
  • For the following 3 weeks, all foods in any quantity allowed except starch and sugar in any form (careful with very sweet fruit). See the menu item titled: Foods to Avoid in Phase 3
  • Be sure to continue to watch the scale and remain within 2 pounds of the last day of taking hCG. If at ANY point you are above 2 pounds, immediately do a steak day (again, this is now a part of your life). See the menu item titled: Oops! I gained more than 2 pounds - the Steak Day

Dan's observations:
  • Q: "How much can I eat on phase 3 (the phase immediately following the hCG taking/VLCD phase called phase 2)?"
  • A: "As much as you can without gaining weight."
  • Q: "Huh?"
  • A: "Makes sense doesn't it? You are being good for 3 weeks and not eating any sugars, sweets, starches or really sweet fruit, but you want to also figure out how much you can eat. Portion control. If you don't learn it, you will just boomerang. At first you will maintain, but eventually you will return to your old weight."
  • Start after day 3, by just doubling the VLCD diet and then slowly add to it, always watching your weight each morning. Watching your weight each morning is an every day thing for the rest of your life, by the way. By the time you get to Phase 4 (the rest of your life phase), you will be better set up to continue with success by maintaining portion control, adding only a small amount of sugars, starches, etc., back in OR realizing that if you do over-do it, a steak-day will be a necessary balance to the out of balance day.

More details straight out of "Pounds and Inches":

Concluding a Course
  • When the three days of dieting after the last dose are over, the patients are told that they may now eat anything they please, except sugar and starch provided they faithfully observe one simple rule.
  • This rule is that they must have their own portable bathroom-scale always at hand, particularly while traveling.
  • They must without fail weigh themselves every morning as they get out of bed, having first emptied their bladder.
  • If they are in the habit of having breakfast in bed, they must weigh before breakfast (DF: wow, this was written in the past wasn't it?).
  • If at ANY point you are above 2 pounds, immediately do a steak day (again, this is now a part of your life). See the menu item titled: Oops! I gained more than 2 pounds - the Steak Day
  • It takes about 3 weeks before the weight reached at the end of the treatment becomes stable, i.e. does not show violent fluctuations after an occasional excess.
  • During this period patients must realize that the so-called carbohydrates, that is sugar, rice, bread, potatoes, pastries, etc, are by far the most dangerous.
  • If no carbohydrates whatsoever are eaten, fats can be indulged in somewhat more liberally and even small quantities of alcohol, such as a glass of wine with meals, does no harm, but as soon as fats and starch are combined things are very liable to get out of hand.
  • This has to be observed very carefully during the first 3 weeks after the treatment is ended otherwise disappointments are almost sure to occur.
